Did The Black Eyed Peas Rip-Off Boom Boom Pow?
Last April, music magazines The Source and Urban Daily were all too quick to make the comparison between The Black Eyed Peas' single "Boom Boom Pow" and Phoenix Phenom's "Boom Dynamite." Now almost a year later, a lawsuit filed alleges the BEPs Mega-hit was stolen from the Chicago artist.
According to the Huffington Post, Ebony Latrice Batts, who performs as Phoenix Phenom, and her songwriter Manny Mohr of Aurora, IL, claim that the hit is a little too similar to their song "Boom Dynamite" to be coincidence. To make matters worse, Phoenix Phenom sent the song to Interscope Records, the Peas's label, in the hopes of getting Fergie to perform on the track. Instead, Interscope turned them down, and the Black Eyed Peas came out with their chart-topped shortly after.
The lawsuit, filed this week, seeks damages from each of the Peas individually, as well as from Interscope and Universal Music Group. They are also asking for a share of the profits and future songwriting credit.
Comparing the two songs, there seems to only be one line that has any type of similarity. By this logic Taylor Swift will have to be sued for "Love Story" who will be sued by The Cardigan's for "Lovefool" who will be sued by Elton John for "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" who will then be sued by Dolly Patron for "I Will Always Love You" who will then be sued by God for "Psalms 136 - Forever Love"
